MONTHLY MARKET UPDATE: JULY 2010

Hot temperatures drove Ontario demand to 25,075 MW on July 8, 2010 – down from the all-time demand peak of 27,005 MW set on August 1, 2006. Overall market consumption for the month reached just 14,560 gigawatt-hours (GWh), the fourth highest July market consumption since the market opened. The average Hourly Ontario Energy Price (HOEP) for the month was $50.83/MWh, while the Global Adjustment came to $7.50/MWh. By contrast, the average HOEP for the year to date is $37.51/MWh with an average Global Adjustment of $25.82/MWh. A prolonged dry spell this year has led to a 20 per cent reduction in hydroelectric output, which in July totalled just 2,118 GWh.
