Smart Grid Forum Member Biographies


Paul Murphy was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Electricity System Operator in October 2006. Prior to his appointment as President, Mr. Murphy was the Chief Operating Officer for the IESO since 2000. Mr. Murphy is past chair of IESO's Technical Panel and has worked in the integrated operation of Ontario's electrical system for over 25 years and in the development and operation of competitive markets for the last ten. Mr. Murphy has been the Vice Chair of NPCC’s Reliability Coordinating Committee and represents Independent System Operators on NERC’s Member Representatives Committee. Mr. Murphy holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario and is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario.

Michael Angemeer is the President and CEO of Veridian Corporation. Veridian serves customers through two subsidiaries, Veridian Connections who operate the electricity distribution system and Veridian Energy who provide business-to-business services to Ontario's energy and telecommunications marketplace. Mr. Angemeer is a leader in the energy industry with over 21 years of experience in electrical distribution and transmission operations. Prior to working at Veridian Corporation, he worked at Enersource Hydro Mississauga and Ontario Hydro. Mr. Angemeer has served on several boards including Chair of the Electricity Distributors Association.  He currently sits as a member of the Board of Management for the Ontario Centre for Excellence in Energy and is a Board of Director for the Durham Strategic Energy Alliance. Mr. Angemeer has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering with Management Science from the University of Waterloo and became a Professional Engineer in 1988.

David Collie is President and CEO of the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) and as such, is an advocate of ESA’s longer-term strategic direction and the vision to create “an Ontario free of electrical fatalities and serious injury, damage or loss”. Mr. Collie has been recognized by the Ontario Power Authority and the Electrical Utility Safety Association for his business and safety leadership in private and public sector management of electric, water and gas utilities. A prominent energy speaker, Mr. Collie was the past President and CEO of Burlington Hydro and has supported the development of Ontario’s electricity network as: a founding member of Ontario’s Smart Grid Forum; former chair of the Electricity Distributors Association; and a Stakeholder Advisory Committee participant for the Independent Electricity System Operator. Mr. Collie holds an MBA, CMA and Chartered Director designation. Awarded the distinction of the “Fellow of the Society” in 2004, Mr. Collie remains a faculty member at the Directors College of Canada, and sits on the Strategic and Risk Management Committee of the Society of Management Accountants of both Ontario and Canada.

Aleck Dadson joined the Ontario Energy Board in December 2007 as Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Dadson has worked extensively in the energy sector within North America and Europe. Prior to joining the OEB, he worked for Direct Energy and Enron Corp. where he was involved in the initial restructuring of Ontario’s electricity market. A lawyer by training, Mr. Dadson served as Special Counsel to the OEB with respect to bulk power rates of the former Ontario Hydro and served as a member of the first Technical Panel of the IESO. Mr. Dadson is a graduate of Oxford University, University of Toronto Law School and Yale Law School.

Norm Fraser is the Chief Operating Officer for Hydro Ottawa and is responsible for its distribution and customer operations. Mr. Fraser has more than 33 years of experience in the electricity industry in the areas of power system planning, design and operations. Prior to joining Hydro Ottawa in 2000, he worked at Hydro One and the former Ontario Hydro.  Mr. Fraser holds an Honours B.A. in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba and is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario.

Anthony Haines is President of Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited, an affiliate of Toronto Hydro Corporation. Mr. Haines is responsible for the overall operations of one of Canada’s largest local distribution utilities. With 20 years of experience in the energy industry, he joined Toronto Hydro as Chief Administrative Officer in 2005 overseeing Toronto Hydro Energy Services Inc., Toronto Hydro Telecom Inc., Toronto Hydro Street Lighting Inc. and Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited-Customer Care. Prior to joining Toronto Hydro Corporation, Mr. Haines held managerial positions at Hydro Ottawa Limited, Westcoast Energy Inc., Enlogix Inc., Union Gas and Centra Gas British Columbia Inc. 

Keith Major is Senior Vice President, Property Management, Bentall Real Estate Services. Mr. Major is responsible for overseeing the management and operations for the Ontario office and industrial profile. With 20 years of experience in commercial real estate operations and management, Mr. Major has spent the past seven years at Bentall managing the growth of its Ontario portfolio from 5 million square feet to 28 million square feet. Mr. Major is currently chair of the Strategic Energy Committee for BOMA Toronto and has actively worked with committee members to create the BOMA Toronto CDM program. He is an Honours graduate of Urban Land Economics from the University of British Columbia.

David McFadden is a partner at Gowlings and Chair of Gowlings’ National Energy and Infrastructure Industry Group. Mr. McFadden has played a key role in a number of initiatives relating to the power industry including Chair of the Stakeholders Alliance for Electricity Competition and Customer Choice, a member of the Electric System Working Group, which is part of the Joint Canada-U.S. Task Force and was appointed to the Ontario Government’s Electricity Conservation and Supply Task Force. Mr. McFadden holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, a law degree from Osgood Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1972.

Julia McNally is the Director, Market Transformation, Conservation division of the Ontario Power Authority. The Market Transformation Team will identify the next generation conservation programs, policies and technologies, and will be known for its innovation, pilot projects, and relevant research. She originally joined the OPA in January of 2006 as Manager – Planning, Coordinating and Reporting, Conservation Bureau. Julia was the chair of the Energy Star for New Homes Advisory Committee in 2011 and is a member of the Quality Urban Energy Systems of Tomorrow steering committee, a cross-Canada group focused on next generation, integrated energy solutions. Ms. McNally has an LLB from The University of Toronto and an LLM from Cambridge University in the UK.

Jatin Nathwani  is a Professor and Ontario Research Chair in Public Policy and Sustainable Energy Management, Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Environmental Studies at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Nathwani has extensive experience in the energy sector and most recently contributed to the development of the Ontario Power Authority’s Integrated Power System Plan.  His involvement in this initiative focused on the environmental and sustainability issues relevant to the planning process. In support of government policies and creating a true conservation culture within Ontario, Dr. Nathwani spearheaded the first major Hydro One conservation and demand management initiative. Dr. Nathwani has authored or co-authored three books, and over 70 reports and technical publications related to energy and risk management.

Jon Norman is a professional engineer with over 10 years experience in consulting and government.  His career spans both the energy and environmental sectors, as well as management consulting.  Jon is currently the Director of Transmission and Distribution Policy with the Ontario Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, where he is responsible for policy development related to electricity grid expansion, smart networks, and Ontario’s new feed-in-tariff program.  In his previous roles in government, he conducted negotiations on hydroelectric power purchases and climate change cap and trade, and led policy around Ontario’s coal replacement program.  Jon holds a bachelors degree in civil engineering from the University of Waterloo, and an interdisciplinary master’s degree in engineering and economics from the University of Toronto.

Wayne Smith is Vice President, Grid Operations for Hydro One Networks Inc. Mr. Smith has held several managerial positions at Hydro One and the former Ontario Hydro including Director of Investment Planning and Director of Performance Measurement, Strategy and Design, Network Asset Management. Mr. Smith has his Bachelor of Applied Science in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto.

Scott Stevens has held the position of Executive Director of Business Development at Northland Power since the year 2000. He is responsible for the development of combined cycle, simple cycle and combined heat and power (CHP) project development. From 1989 to 1998, Mr. Stevens was Manager of Business Development for water infrastructure and for gas fired generation at Consumers Utilities (an affiliate of Enbridge). He was the Manager of the Enerdemo Program at Energy Mines and Resources from 1985-1989 and Manager of the Remote Power Group at the Ontario Ministry of Energy from 1981-1985. In addition to thermal power project development, Mr. Stevens holds an MBA from the University of Toronto, an MES from York University and a BA from the University of Western Ontario. He has served on the Boards of both APPrO and the CDEA.

Jac Vanderbaan is Festival Hydro's Chief Operating Officer. Festival Hydro is the local distribution company for the City of Stratford, and the towns of St Marys, Seaforth, Brussels, Dashwood, Hensall, and Zurich. Mr. Vanderbaan worked for electric utilities in Western Canada and Ontario in various engineering roles prior to joining Festival Hydro in 2001. Mr. Vanderbaan is a member of the ESA Utility Advisory Committee, and a Board Member of the EDA and MEARIE representing the Niagara Grand District. Mr. Vanderbaan graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1991 with a BASc in Electrical Engineering and has been a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) since 1994 and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) since 2009.
