Wind Power in Ontario - Studies and Presentations

The IESO, in conjunction with other organizations, have conducted technical studies assessing the operational impacts of wind generation on the electricity system owing to the variable nature of wind.

Studies
  • General Electric (GE)/AWS Truewind Wind Study, published October 2006. This study was undertaken on behalf of the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), and the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) to assess the implications of large scale wind integration into the Ontario power system.

  • AWS Truewind Study, published April 2005 is a study of the potential impacts of significantly enhanced wind energy generation on the Ontario electrical grid.

  • AWS Truewind Report: Simulated Wind Generation Data, published 2007. The OPA retained AWS Truewind LLC to produce 20 years of simulated hourly wind generation data for 60 prospective wind project sites in Ontario totalling over 8,000 MW and to prepare a report summarizing its methodology and findings.
