Demand Demand Inforamtion

Demand

Ontario Demand – Hourly and 5-Minute: Represents the energy supplied by the IESO-Administered Market to meet demand within Ontario. The IESO calculates Ontario Demand by subtracting scheduled exports from Total Market Demand. It is also equal to the sum of all loads (consumption) within Ontario supplied from the market, plus all line losses incurred on the IESO-controlled grid.

Market Demand – Hourly and 5 Minute: Represents the total energy supplied by the IESO-Administered Market. The IESO calculates Market Demand by summing all output from generators registered in the market plus all scheduled imports to the province. It is also equal to the sum of all load supplied from the Market plus exports from the province, plus all line losses incurred on the IESO-controlled grid.

Today’s Projected Peak (at time): Represents the projected maximum amount of electricity required to meet peak Ontario and Market Demand for the day. Project demand can change throughout the day as the weather, system status and other factors that affect demand and supply also change. Where two intervals have the same projected peak, the earlier hour will be reported.

Today’s Projected Minimum (at time): Represents the lowest projected amount of electricity required to meet Ontario and Market Demand for the day.

Operating Reserve Requirement: Generation or load reduction capacity that the IESO can call upon on short notice to restore a balance between supply and demand, in the event of an unexpected demand increase or generator outage. The IESO purchases defined amounts of Operating Reserve from participants via three real-time markets.

Supply Supply Inforamtion

Supply

Generator Availability at Peak: Total amount of Ontario electricity generation available to produce energy at the predicted demand peak hour.

Generator Availability (at time): Total amount of Ontario electricity generation available to produce energy as per the previous hour’s output reports.

Output (by Fuel Type): Energy production by generators, 20 MW or greater, by fuel type (nuclear, hydro, gas, wind, coal and other – mostly woodwaste), published 30 minutes following the dispatching hour.

Hourly Imports: Total amount of scheduled electricity imported into Ontario, from neighbouring jurisdictions – Michigan, Manitoba, Minnesota, Quebec and New York.

Hourly Exports: Total amount of scheduled electricity exported from Ontario to neighbouring jurisdictions - Michigan, Manitoba, Minnesota, Quebec and New York.

Price Price Inforamtion

Price

Current Hourly Ontario Energy Price (HOEP): Charged to Local Distribution Companies and large customers who use more than 250,000 kWh a year. HOEP is also paid to self-scheduling generators. HOEP is the hourly arithmetic average of the uniform Ontario energy price determined for each of the 12, 5-minute dispatch intervals in a particular hour.

Market Clearing Price (5-Minute Price): Calculated every five minutes, 12 times an hour. This is the price paid to generators and charged to dispatchable load.

Global Adjustment: Accounts for the difference between the market price and the rates paid to regulated and contracted generators and for conservation and demand management programs.

The First Estimate: Published at the beginning of the month and incorporates a forecast of Ontario demand to project the revenue needed to cover the global adjustment costs for that month. It also takes into account variances from previous months. Actual Global Adjustment costs for the previous month are also posted.

Average Weighted Price (Month): The Hourly Ontario Energy Price weighted by the amount of electricity used throughout the province within each hour, with adjustments.

Hourly Uplift Settlement Charge: The Estimated Hourly Uplift Settlement Charges presents hourly estimates of this charge which covers the costs of Operating Reserve, Congestion Management Settlement Credits, Intertie Offer Guarantee payments (IOG), and other hourly costs such as energy losses on the IESO-controlled grid.

The IESO uses the "Hour Ending" naming convention for the hours in a day. For example, Hour 1 is from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m., Hour 2 is from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. Hours 1-24 are the hours from midnight one day through midnight the next day. Eastern Standard Time is used year round.
