Changes to the Global Adjustment

The Global Adjustment (GA) is the difference between the total payments made to certain contracted or regulated generators/demand management projects, and market revenues.

Starting January 1, 2011, customers with an average peak demand over five megawatts (MW) during a defined Base Period will be considered ‘Class A’ customers.  The monthly GA amounts for these customers will be based on their coincident peak demands. This change is a result of Regulation 398/10 amending Regulation 429/04.

GA amounts for Class A customers will now be based on the percentage that their peak demand contributes to overall system demand during the five peak hours of a defined Base Period. For example, if their demand is assessed to be responsible for one per cent of peak demand during the five peak hours of the Base Period, they will be charged one per cent of the total monthly global adjustment costs throughout the subsequent billing period (called Adjustment Period).

The IESO has worked extensively to reach out to large electricity consumers affected by this regulation. For more information, please see the IESO’s backgrounder, the IESO’s presentation (with sample session agenda), or contact IESO Customer Relations at 1-888-448-7777.

All other consumers are considered Class B and will continue to pay for the Global Adjustment based on their total monthly consumption.

**The total MW value for each date is different between the two base periods because the IESO received updated embedded generation numbers in the spring of 2011.
